I stumbled across the tasty El Donostiarra pintxos in Sitges by accident one sunny Sunday when I was absolutely ravenous. What a hidden gem it is!
El Donostiarra (C. Major, 14) is filled with locals, which is always a good sign, tucking into traditional Basque region dishes and freshly made pintxos from the bar, washed down with a local beer, wine or traditional Vermut.
What to do….
Don’t be intimidated to enter this little place as there is a real mix of regulars and tourists inside. The entrance way is quite small but it opens up and there are two sections inside, one with bar stools and high tables, and a larger restaurant with tables through a little doorway.
There’s a great atmosphere! You don’t need a reservation but at the height of the season and at weekends it is absolutely packed so be prepared to be patient as it’s worth hanging around for a table or a seat at the bar. I personally think this is the best time to go as the pintxos are constantly replenished so they are all super fresh.
There is no need to grab a waiter if you manage to get a seat at the bar. Simply help yourself to a plate and fill it with your choice of pintxos. On the left side of the bar you will find the cold options and the hot are on the right. Go back as many times as you like!
Every dish is absolutely delicious. From sizzling chorizo to crispy ‘croquettas’ you really can’t go wrong. If you fancy something a little different you can also try a few bits off their menu, such as the padron peppers or grilled prawns.
You keep the little sticks from each of the pieces and then take them to the till at the end to pay. You even do this with your drink…ask for it over the counter and it comes with a stick to add to your collection.
The food and drinks are very reasonably priced and the waiters are typical Basque cheeky gents. I had a Vermut and nine different pieces and it came to 12.95 euros.
If you do visit then make sure you try one of their amazing Vermuts and I’d love to hear what your favourite dishes were!
