The trend for a speakeasyis still going strong and a few weeks ago I visited the slick ‘pastrami outlet’ that is El Paridiso.
One of Barcelona’s top hidden bars where you will find not only some of the coolest looking cocktails (and bar staff) in town, but also the most beautiful bar ceiling I’ve seen.
I took my husband as a surprise. There were a few people mingling outside the slick window front in the trendy El Born area and I told the doorman we were there for a ‘sandwich’. Once inside we were whisked passed the amazing looking pastrami sandwiches, which you can actually order too (I’d highly recommend!), into a secret gem behind the fridge door.
The list of cocktails is very impressive. From smoking whiskies served with cheese under a glass dome to drinking from a glass pipe topped with candy floss, it’s fair to say they are all quite unique.
The waiters and waitresses were dressed in tropical branded t-shirts and within a few minutes we were brought two little cups of water and the cocktail menu. A nice touch. It helps that all of the cocktails come in different style glasses and these are highlighted on the menu as little icons. So when you fancy what the person next to you is drinking all you have to do is search for the little glass shape, e.g. a bird (as you do), and there you have it.
Taste wise, lots of alcohol however in all honesty, not the tastiest cocktails I’ve ever had, but definitely the best looking and a great all round experience.
Oh, and I’ll let you into a little secret about the toilets. There’s an inner sanctum too, only for the lucky enough amongst us to find. See if you can find it.
Hint – sit along the bar to watch the bartenders creating a range of crazy works of art. It’s quite a sight!
