The Fish & Chips Shop BCN. The real deal?

The one single meal that both of my children still say that they miss from the UK is ‘fish and chips’!  Not the healthiest thing to miss but it’s definitely a British tradition in most families.

Having been a naughty family favourite when I was a child…that smell of steaming vinegar, or ‘broon sauce’ if you’re from my hometown of  Edinburgh, eaten after school (or, in my later years, after a night out on the town when I swear it tastes even better!) out of an original newspaper wrapper…I have to say, it’s one of the guilty pleasures that I miss too.

So, when browsing Instagram one day I stumbled across the Barcelona group of Fish & Chips Shops.  I was very excited and thought I’d surprise my boys on a day out.

As we were in the area, we went to the Balmes branch.  There are four different locations across Barcelona, you can find the addresses here.

We took a seat at the counter, where we could see everything being cooked.

The service was very good, with menus put in front of us as soon as we sat down.  Maybe not ideal wording for your 8 and 10 year old children to read but I found it quirky (and told them not to repeat the words to their friends)!

We ordered the traditional fish and chips (merluza de pincho a la tempura de cereales acompañado de patatas) at a cost of 8.30 euros (a little expensive in my opinion).

When the food arrived, in silver cone dishes, it was lovely and fresh HOWEVER, sadly, nothing at all like British fish and chips.  No fault of theirs really, and I guess more a fault of ours for assuming that all fish and chips should be in the UK style!

There was a distinct curry flavour to the batter.  It was really tasty, however my boys’ faces tried to hide their disappointment and I felt bad for them after promising a British treat.

So, in summary, if you’re looking for a traditional British Fish & Chips concept in Barcelona, don’t make the same mistake as I did. This is not it.  You will eat a delicious little meal if you go with different expectations!

Have you been?  Have you found somewhere that we can satisfy our craving in Barcelona?  We can definitely live without it but would love to hear your recommendations below.
